How Does the Internet Work? – Glad You Asked S1

For most of us, the internet is virtual, made of Instagram posts, emails and YouTube videos. And, access to the vital utility isn’t guaranteed across the world. Glad You Asked host Cleo Abram wants to know: What is the internet actually made of? And, how does it work? Answering that question involves discovering how internet cables are laid in the sea, if 5G is really the future, and how balloons in the stratosphere are helping people connect.

  1. When I was a kid, we had dialup phone landline service. This was from the late 1990s. I was 15 years old when internet launched. We had Service Electric back then. Now going on 12 years of using Xfinity service. Kids today don’t understand the feeling that I’ve had when connected with a phone line.

  2. Love the internet and definitely appreciate the value it adds to people's lives but really concerned about the resources required for this. Such as plastic plants that are polluting bays for the balloons that the companies use to lift into the air. I know because I live in one and have to continually fight companies to stop building in the delicate ecosystems. I would love to know how we as a society can have the internet without such destructive measures to the natural world around us? Why do animals have to be harmed for our conveniences? Other humans matter but so do the wildlife that work symbiotically to keep our lives alive.
