  2. Hello friends. Please take a look at ICANN's policies regarding transparency and accountability in the link below. I believe you will see that Mr. Cruz is painting a false and scary picture of this administrational process. Keep in mind that the process of transferring the administration from US to ICANN, started 18 years ago. This is not Obama's plan 🙂 Please make up your own mind and do not be guided by conspiracy theories. All the best! https://www.icann.org/resources/accountability

  3. The worst of it isn't Russia, China, or Iran getting control. The worst is if countries people otherwise wouldn't object to get control, such as Germany or the UK. Recently, people in these countries have been arrested for Facebook posts they've made in opposition to the importation of Syrian refugees.

Think about that for a second. Before reading that, would you oppose Germany or the UK influencing who can or cannot register a domain name?

  4. STOP OBAMA'S TRANSFER OF THE INTERNET! FUCK THE INTERNATIONAL CONTROL OF THE INTERNET! FUCK OBAMA! TELL EVERYBODY YOU KNOW TO STOP OBAMA! CALL 202-224-3121 AND ASK YOUR SENATOR TO VOTE FOR BILL S3034 INTERNET FREEDOM ACT. WE DON'T WANT INTERNATIONAL CONTROLL OF THE INTERNET! URGENT!

  5. IT people seem to have no sense of dignity. Cruz is for the most part right.

The UN has expressed a desire to charge taxes on domain registration, and has demanded the installation of deep packet inspection tools on servers. ICANN's registration is the center-point of the web that could enabled global spying and censorship. Ending all your thoughts of privacy online, even with Tor of VPN.

At the SAME time, in 2013, ICANN has expressed desire to further screw over independent investigators by wanting to end free public access to WHOIS. This would be a major blow to online security. It would also damage YouTube, as ICANN WHOIS is one of the best ways to investigate copyfruad on this channel and get false claims lifted.

There is no fraud protection outside the US for online consumers. The US government can enforce upon falsely registered domain names. ICANN is typically the way they do it. Giving that up is a serious blow to consumer protection.

  6. As a system administrator by profession, this video may have just given me cancer. I have never seen such a blatant misunderstanding of what ICANN does. It hurts.

ICANN is the authority on IP address delegation. They ensure that entities are not issued duplicate IPs, which would cause massive network issues for everyone.. They also authorize the creation of new domain extensions (.com, .net, .gov, .xyz, etc.). They "control the internet" in the same way the entity that is making sure you don't get issued a phone number already in use is "controlling the phone systems"

  7. Guys, chill out. ICANN independence has been planned since before GW Bush was in office — and Bush agreed with it. ICANN effectively acts independently already, and if governments like those in "Russia, and China, and Iran" want to censor the Internet, they already can — they already do! ICANN independence won't change this.

Cruz here is likely making this a scary thing to build political capital for himself, but there's very little real fear by anyone actually involved in this whole thing that this is a bad idea. https://newrepublic.com/article/117093/us-withdraws-icann-why-its-no-big-deal

Btw, it's an amazing twist to me that Cruz is the person pushing for this so passionately — when he's the person who took the most hardline stance against carrier II "net neutrality" classification a couple years back. The whole point of net neutrality, of course, is to preserve a free Internet here in the US — especially for the "millions of free businesses" coming online that Cruz talks about at around :14.

And it's ALSO worth pointing out that allowing ICANN to be independent would mean LESS gov't involvement — it's actually, in a way, a free market move. Again, one would assume Mr. Cruz would be in favor of this, if he weren't just spending lots of money to make a fancy hype film building up his own reputation as a tech-savvy vanguard of 21st-century freedoms.

  8. why didn't Sen.Ted Cruz mentioned Saudi Arabia as a threat?
isn't this kingdom is an insane religious dictatorship which despise free speech and implemented some sort of religious thought-police?
aren't actually a saudis pulling strings?
they donated pretty large summ to Hillary and set one of their mouthpiece as her advisor?
Aren't the most islamic terrorists sunnis after all?
    Still, fully support Cruz's agenda.
